Miki Kiyoshi and the Afterlives of his Thought

This volume brings together a series of essays on the philosophical and historical legacy of the Kyoto School philosopher Miki Kiyoshi (1897–1945). It is divided into two parts. The first deals with the ways Miki’s ideas on technology and imagination resonate with the ideas of prominent thinkers like Nishitani Keiji, Yuk Hui, Nakamura Yūjirō, Gilbert Simondon, Kuno Osamu, Hannah Arendt, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Hans-Georg Gadamer. The second part is comprised of historical investigations into Miki’s life and thought on a variety of different fronts: Iwanami culture, the development of subjectivity, Neo-Kantianism, religion, Marxism, literature, technology, and war. In this way, Miki’s life and thought is shown to hold an important place in modern Japanese philosophy and intellectual history.
